SKIPPING: THE UNDERRATED CARDIO

Hello, my cardio junkies. Today is a really short post on the often neglected but effective cardio tool, 🥁🥁🥁 please: A SKIPPING ROPE!!!!

God knows my handy skipping rope (borrowed from and never returned to my skinny queen mama 😜), which cost less than N1,000 in the market has served me well. I cannot travel without my skipping rope because skipping is not only a great cardio workout but it tones your arms, legs and stomach. Depending on the different variations of skipping (and trust me, they are endless), it is a full body workout. 



During the DNA program (see my post on dieting), we skipped every day (at least 1,000 skips including Sunday 😩). The results were amazing!!!!

Not only did it improve my endurance, it also toned by arms. On New Year's Day, when I had less than 30mins to workout with my mum giving me side eye, skipping and a few squats (more like 200) came to the rescue. An added bonus is that you can skip anywhere: in your house, car park, garage, gym. 



For those who were intimidated by my last post on running, skipping should do the trick. It's cheap, easy and way less daunting. Honestly, I am torn between skipping and running but I alternate between both as I am the original cardio queen. 

As always, a few tips to skipping:

1) Get a skipping rope. Easy enough step but get a good rope that does not tangle and that is appropriate for your height or easily adjustable.
2) Skip on the ball of your feet, like your hopping up and down. PLEASE DO NOT land like a hot potato on your heels. It's a light movement, which does not require high jump either, just lightly hop up and down.
3) Start slowly, perhaps 20 skips and then rest for 20 seconds to catch your breathe. Repeat for 5 sets to get to 100 skips. I am currently on 250-300 skips at a go with 30secs-1min rest in between (minimum of 1,000 skips for me).
4) PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Try different moves. I am currently learning to do double-unders. Beginners, don't try this yet, I take God beg you. Well, if you're daring, try it and let me know the results 😜
5) Have fun with it. Play your favourite party music while you skip. If you have kids around you, let them join in for some fun and exercise.
